Music and Lyrics, Adam Cole
Some years ago, my friend Steve Espinola asked his friends to donate money to help keep legendary songwriter Biff Rose in his apartment. In return, Steve offered to send a tape of Biff's music to those who donated.
I bit and sent some money. Alas, the tape never arrived. I bugged Steve about it a few times and finally decided to write a song with the above title as a more substantial reminder.
The song itself emerged in a very strange way. The lyrics were a more-or-less automatic-writing experiment on the subject of my friendship with Steve. Which one is me and which one is him? Yes, absolutely. I had already come up with the repeating piano accompaniment and had been looking for a place to use it. I turned on the tape-recorder and improvised my melody on the spot.
For the remix I added some effects that make it more bizarre and, I hope, a little more fun.
By the way, Steve did in fact send me three Biff Rose CDs after that.
Hey, Steve, Could You Send Me My Biff Rose Tape, I Paid For It Already

So there were these two guys
In an elevator and the cable
Snapped They were in that moment
between the weight of life and
the snooze of death. They were
weightless and one of them said
"I'm bored."
The other said
"You're not looking hard enough."
One of them said the world
is my oyster but I'm so blue.
The other said seafood is
dangerous for you. The other
said I love the blues The
one said if I could love I'd
be like you.

Then they danced the barcarolle
And the vator gan to roll.
Like a boat in middle air
Heading to something from nowhere.

Did these two guys ever meet
it's hard to say One of them
never met anybody and the
other met lots of people but
looked through them so its
hard to say where the connection
lay Maybe the sky passed
through them both and that's how
Maybe
they weren't connected at all,
And that's how
I never met either
of these guys and they're
both dead anyway lost on
a long plunge in the elevator
I don't even know if they
hit or not.

Then they danced the barcarolle
And the vator gan to roll.
Like a boat in middle air
Heading to something from nowhere.
